  • Honorary/Participating Withdrawal Information
    Updated On: May 12, 2021

If you decide to leave the union, you have three options regarding your membership. You can request an Honorary Withdrawal, a Participating Withdrawal or you can be dropped from membership after six months of non-payment of dues.

Honorary Withdrawal card – IBEW Constitution - Article XXIV, Section 3

    • Honorary Withdrawal may be granted to any member who has left the electrical industry or has been promoted to a non-bargaining unit position.
    • In order to obtain Honorary Withdrawal status, it shall require a majority vote at a local meeting as provided in Article XXIV of the IBEW Constitution.
    • Members must be current in the payment of their dues according to Article XXIV, Section 3 of the IBEW Constitution.
    • Members on Honorary Withdrawal are bound by the conditions set forth in the IBEW Constitution but are not entitled to attend local union meetings or to any local union benefits. Members on withdrawal are subject to charges, trial and appropriate penalty in accordance with provisions of the constitution.
    • Members will maintain their Local 8 pension and remain vested in NEBF.
    • Members accepting an Honorary Withdrawal card will forfeit all prior IBEW pension credits and death benefits.
    • When returning to the trade, members can only activate their membership in the local union that granted their Honorary Withdrawal.

Participating Withdrawal card – IBEW Constitution - Article XXIV

    • Participating Withdrawal may be granted to any member who has left the electrical industry or has been promoted to a non-bargaining unit position.
    • In order to obtain Participating Withdrawal status, it shall require a majority vote at a local meeting as provided in Article XXIV of the IBEW Constitution.
    • Dues must be paid through the month in which the member is placed on withdrawal.
    • Members will pay dues directly to the International Office following approval of the Participating Withdrawal Card.
    • Members on Participating Withdrawal are bound by the conditions set forth in the IBEW Constitution but are not entitled to attend local union meetings or to any local union benefits. Members on withdrawal are subject to charges, trial and appropriate penalty in accordance with provisions of the constitution.
    • When returning to the trade, members can only activate their membership in the local union that granted their Participating Withdrawal.

Drop from Membership – After six months in arrears – IBEW Constitution - Article XXI

    • Dropped members are no longer Local 8 or IBEW members and cannot attend union meetings or events.
    • Dropped members will maintain their Local 8 Pension and remain vested in NEBF.
    • Dropped members will forfeit their IBEW pension credits and death benefits, (“…no death benefit shall be payable upon the death of a non-retired ”A” member if such member is more than 2 months in arrears.”)

Military Withdrawals – IBEW Constitution - Article XII, Section 10

    • Any member holding good standing immediately prior to the first of the month in which the member enters the military service for the first time or is recalled to such military service, under the laws of the United States or Canada, shall be issued a Military Service Card by the Financial Secretary of his Local Union on application by such member.
    • The member receiving such a card, upon being released or discharge from military service, shall within sixty (60) days thereafter deposit it with the Financial Secretary or the Local union that issued the card and resume payment of local union dues and per capita tax.
    • Any member who remains in or enters military service, without being required to do so, shall not be entitled to retain the Military Service Card nor shall such member be issued a new one in such circumstances; provided, however, that a member serving or reenlisting in the National Guard or in the military reserves may retain the Military Service Card benefit whenever called to active duty.
    • During the period that any member holds a valid Military Service Card, such member shall not be required to pay dues or per capita tax but shall retain all membership privileges.
